INHIGEO holds an annual meeting referred to as the Annual Symposium since its foundation in 1967.
The full list of Symposia is available here.
The Annual Symposium is held in association with the International Geological Congress (IGC) and with the International Congress of History of Science and Technology (ICHST) on the years in which they are organized. Proposals to host the Annual Symposium are submitted by INHIGEO members worldwide to the INHIGEO Board for their consideration and selected to represent a geographical range across the five continents and diverse thematic issues. Presentation of research at the symposia in the history of geological sciences is open also to non-members. Participation of young researchers is particularly encouraged and can be supported on application by grants from the Commission.
Awards for excellence in presentation at the Annual Symposia by students and early career scholars have been established by the Commission in 2022.
Our geo-historical fieldtrips or excursions are always part of the INHIGEO annual meetings, because they are essential in complementing our scholarly programmes. These excursions often allow one to see geological features in the field, while following the footsteps of geologists of the past and replicating their historical field trips. As the excursions are usually organized by INHIGEO members with the collaboration of local groups and communities, the emphasis on historical content becomes a powerful tool for communicating geological sciences within the cultural identity of local people and society. In several cases, the INHIGEO excursions allow us to offer additional value to existing geo-heritage sites, as well as to identify new sites of geo-historical relevance. For this reason, to take part to our annual symposia, which are always open also to non INHIGEO members, is a truly multidisciplinary, scientific, historical, cultural, environmental, as well as social experience.
Proceedings volumes and collections of papers arising from the Annual Symposia are regularly published as books and in scientific journals. See Symposia Proceedings

The next INHIGEO symposium will take place in Dunedin, New Zealand – 29 June – 5 July 2025
